Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: Semi-Final Scenarios India’s Road Gets Harder, Australia Nearly Through

India’s campaign at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has hit a rough patch following their six-wicket defeat to South Africa at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Sunday. The loss left Harmanpreet Kaur’s side second in Group A with four points and a net run rate of +2.511, but they can no longer afford to be complacent as they must win both remaining matches against Bangladesh and Australia to guarantee their semi-final berth.

India Still in the Hunt, But Margin for Error Gone

India’s path to the last four has become noticeably steeper. The defeat ended their winning start and opened the door for South Africa to re-enter the frame. Another setback for India particularly if South Africa keep winning could spell an early exit from the tournament.

Should India beat both Bangladesh and Australia, they will seal their semi-final place regardless of what their rivals do. Even in a scenario where all three teamsIndia, South Africa, and Bangladesh finish level on points, India’s superior net run rate would likely work in their favour, giving them the edge in a tight finish.

The danger scenario: if India lose to both Bangladesh and Australia, they would end on just four points. South Africa, who still have matches against Bangladesh and the Netherlands, are capable of winning both, leaving India on the outside looking in.

Australia Knocking on the Door

Six-time champions Australia have been the standout side in the group, stamping their authority with three commanding victories. They opened with a 65-run demolition of South Africa, followed that up with a nine-wicket win over Bangladesh, and then crushed debutants Netherlands by 98 runs. They sit top of Group A with six points and a remarkable net run rate of +4.391.

A single win from their final two fixtures against Pakistan or India would be sufficient to confirm their place in the semi-finals.

South Africa Back in Contention

The Proteas began poorly, suffering a heavy 65-run loss to Australia that dented their net run rate significantly. However, they showed character to grind past Pakistan in a two-wicket thriller before Marizanne Kapp’s brilliant display guided them to a six-wicket victory over India. Back-to-back wins have lifted South Africa to third in the table, though their net run rate of -0.546 remains a lingering concern heading into matches against the Netherlands and Bangladesh.

Their fate remains in their own hands. Heavy victories in those remaining games would help them recover their run rate and keep pressure on India heading into the final round of group fixtures.

Bangladesh Hanging In

Bangladesh have quietly kept themselves relevant in the group. They secured a six-wicket win over Netherlands and went on to beat Pakistan by 23 runs in a game where Pakistan slipped from a promising 49 for 1 to 84 for 8. Their upcoming fixtures against India and South Africa will define their tournament.

Pakistan and Netherlands Out of the Race

Pakistan and the Netherlands have already been eliminated from semi-final contention. Pakistan, despite Fatima Sana’s exceptional efforts with both bat and ball throughout the tournament, have lost all three of their matches and play out their remaining games against Australia and the Netherlands with nothing but pride at stake. Netherlands, making their Women’s T20 World Cup debut, have shown admirable fighting spirit, though three defeats including heavy losses to India and Australia have ended their chances of progressing.
