1. Sachin Tendulkar – 15,921 Test Runs

Sachin Tendulkar — Most runs in Test cricket Tendulkar later went on to play 200 Tests in a career spanning 24 years, scoring 15,921 runs from set an average of virtually 53.78 across 329 innings.

He has 51 hundreds and 68 fifties in Test cricket, cementing his name among the most consistent batters of all time.

Beginning in 1989 and retiring in 2013, Tendulkar had a hall of fame career. His fitness, skills and ability to score runs against all sorts of opposition bowlers set a standard that has proved close to impossible to break.

2. Joe Root – 14,208 Test Runs

England’s Joe Root is currently second on the list of players with the most Test runs.

Root has continued to add to his impressive tally since making his Test debut in 2012. According to current Test records, he has scored 14,208 runs, putting him ahead of Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid.

Root’s rise up the rankings has been remarkable. In July 2025, he overtook Dravid, Kallis and Ponting to move into second place. The ICC reported at the time that Root had reached 13,409 runs and become the second-highest run-scorer in Test history.

Because Root is still an active Test cricketer, his career total can continue to increase. This makes him the most realistic current candidate to challenge Tendulkar’s long-standing record.

3. Ricky Ponting – 13,378 Test Runs

The highest run-scorer in Test history is Australian great Ricky Ponting who amassed 13,378 runs over a 168-match career.

Ponting was an attacking batsman with a solid technique and the ability to take control of bowling attacks. His Test record comprises 41 centuries and 62 fifties, with a top score of 257.

Ponting was one of the closest challengers to Tendulkar’s record for years. But Joe Root’s form has since dropped Ponting to third in the all-time list.

4. Jacques Kallis – 13,289 Test Runs

Jacques Kallis is among the greatest to have played cricket as an all-founder.

In the final summary, Kallis has 13,289 Test runs in a career spanning 166 matches, averaging more than 55 with the bat. In Tests too, he scored 45 centuries and is amongst the highest run-getters in the format.

6. Alastair Cook – 12,472 Test Runs

Alastair Cook of England is the highest Test run-scorer in his country and one of the most successful opening batters in cricket history.

Can Joe Root Break Sachin Tendulkar’s Record?

That is one of the more interesting questions in contemporary Test cricket.

Tendulkar ended his career with 15,921 runs and Root has more than14700 already.

That leaves Root still needing just under 1,700 additional runs to overtake Tendulkar.

Because Root is a playing Test player, this cannot be completely written off. But it would still take the extra runs and longevity at the very top level to break Tendulkar’s record.

As such, Root’s journey will continue to be one of the most compelling narratives in Test cricket.
