How Are Points Awarded in WPL?

WPL is based on a simple points table in the league phase:

  • Win: 2 points
  • Loss: 0 points
  • No result: 1 point

Tie: one point if the game ends in a tie, resolved by a completed Super Over or by additional Super Overs

That puts the team with the most points at this point top. When teams are equal on points, then the number of wins and if still level, net run rate will come into play.

What Is NRR in the WPL Points Table?

NRR stands for Net Run Rate. This is a key factor in order to tie-breaking ties between teams that have the same number of points and wins.

To put it simply, NRR is a measure of how a team’s scoring rate compares with its opponents across the matches played during the league stage. Thus, if two teams have the same points total, a higher NRR will see one team finish above the other.

Like in the case of WPL 2023, both Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians ended with the same number of points (12 as well) and won the same number of matches (six). The NRR of Delhi Capitals was +1.856 compared to Mumbai Indians’ +1.711, and hence they finished above MI in the table.

WPL League Stage and Playoffs

Each team plays the other teams in the league stage of WPL. Points from these games dictate where the teams lie on the table.

The relevant bit is the league table, as the final positions are used to determine who qualifies for the knockout stage. The teams then play the relevant playoff matches as per the WPL competition format, after league matches.

This is why the points table offers more than a mere ranking; it reflects how consistently teams performed throughout the league stage.
